The data conversion tool, generate_map_data_type1, (documented here) can now join coastlines so that areas of OSM data containing unclosed sea areas can be drawn properly. There's an interesting discussion of the problem on the OSM wiki, here. This is what it looks like. The map is of Lidingö, an island that is part of Stockholm.
